The Reserved Zone (Core Ecotourism Area)

This deeply protected inner sanctuary requires official permits to enter. It protects pristine primary rainforest and dense Amazonian wildlife.

The Reserved Zone is the core area for ecotourism in Manu National Park. You cannot visit independently. Travelers must go with a registered agency and an authorized guide.

Entry requires a permit from SERNANP. The fee is about 150 soles (roughly $40) for a 3 to 5-day visit. This cost is usually included in your multi-day tour price.

Salvador Oxbow Lake (Cocha Salvador)

This is one of the largest lakes in Manu. It is known for regular sightings of endangered giant river otters and black caimans. Tours often use silent catamarans. This prevents startling the otters while observing them hunt.

Otorongo Lake (Cocha Otorongo)

This protected lake features a 15-meter observation tower. The structure is built directly into the jungle canopy. Climb the tower for a panoramic view of the lake. It provides excellent canopy birdwatching opportunities.

Macaw Clay Licks (Collpas)

Hundreds of colorful macaws and parrots gather at these mineral-rich riverbank cliffs to eat clay. You must observe from a strict distance to avoid scaring the birds.

Limonal Ranger Station

This is the official SERNANP checkpoint for the area. Park rangers inspect permits here before allowing entry into the Reserved Zone. It is a great spot to stretch your legs.
